You Can Use Your Silhouette to Cut Cricut Images!!

Sunday, March 30, 2014

If you're anything like me, you've invested a fair amount into your Cricut cartridges and love so many of the wonderful images. I'll never tire of those sweet Doodlecharms characters! However, now that I have my Cameo, I find that I'm using SVGs more and more.  I love the variety of cuts available and I also love the ease of the Silhouette software.  Although I do continue to pull out my Cricut now and then, I wondered if it was worth it to me to invest in the new Cricut Explore.  I have read some reviews about how much better the Silhouette cuts.  I have to admit that my Silhouette cuts much more cleanly than my Expression.  (Note: I have not tried the Explore so can not make a comparison with that.)

Earlier today, I was trying to cut the reindeer from Very Merry Tags and was using my Cricut.  I needed the cut to be on the smallish side - 2.75in.  I tried several times using several methods and had no success.  The antlers ripped each and every time. I then wondered if there was a way to use my Silhouette to cut the image so mucked about with things for a bit... and there is a way!! Using Cricut Design Space, Paint and my Silhouette Cameo software, I was able to import the reindeer image and cut it out using my Silhouette.  Here's a photo comparison:

I find that the Silhouette cut is more defined than the Cricut cut.  Plus, the antlers cut out beautifully! I'm so excited to continue to use the Cricut images that I love so much and combine them with the SVGs that I also love to use.

I created a video tutorial which provides instructions on how to use your Silhouette to cut Cricut images.  I humbly request that you demonstrate integrity in using this method to cut only images which you have already purchased.

NOTE: Cricut has had my video tutorial removed from YouTube. I have spoken with a lawyer and there is absolutely nothing wrong with what I am doing. However, it's simply not worth it to "fight" the issue.  If interested in this method, please feel free to email me at smallbitsofpaper@hotmail.com and I'll be happy to send you written instructions.

Ahhhhhh-mazing! I tried to follow along with Cricut Craft Room and it did not work for me because it picked up the lines from the mat. I'll have to see if I can get this new Cricut Design Space with all my 200 + carts can't afford to waste all those images. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for sharing, my dear Kate! Your video is amazing, too! :o) I use a Mac and have never seen Cricut Design Space, but I'll have to fiddle around to see if I can work something out, too! This is so exciting. Thank you for sharing with us, my friend! :o)

Hugs and blessings,
Karen

I will have to watch your video. Just something I wanted to note. I have a few Cricuts and I also have a Cameo, by far the cameo cuts cleaner than the Cricuts do. I cut out that exact reindeer for my Christmas cards this past year. I used my Cricut and cut one from some white cardstock from Walmart, it torn up the antlers like your did. Using the same settings on my cricut went and cut out the reindeer again using Cutmates cardstock and they cut perfect. So card does make a huge difference.

Kate here is a link to that paper I was talking about.http://www.worldwinpapers.com/cutmates.html I learned about it from the Make the Cut forum. It is fabulous cutting paper, whenever I have to cut something small and detailed I use it.
Thanks for taking a peak at my blog

Looks like the Provo Police arrived before I saw this. I just got a Silhouette after many years/two Cricuts/over 100 cartridges and multiple hours of aggravation. I debated getting the Explore and opted to go with Silhouette after seeing the issues I had with Cricut/Provo Craft not corrected or even addressed; just them pumping out more machines/stuff to buy that had some cool bells and whistles but the same problems. Is there any chance I could get written instructions on how to do this?

They have taken your video down and I have searched everyway to do this and tried some things but I cannot get it to work! Would you care to email me how you did this? kelliebdesigns@gmail.com
Thanks in Advance!

Thanks for finding out how to do this! I'm thinking about replacing my cricut (I have an OLD one, the original expression) with the Silhouette. Since the video is down, do you have text instructions anywhere? Thanks!!

Oh my goodness! I would so love to learn how you did this. I just recently (yesterday!) bought a Cameo. I still own 4 Cricut machines and way more cartridges that I could possible use in a year but I don't have reliable internet to use the Explore. I love how the Cameo can be used without an internet connection. I would greatly appreciate the instructions to use my "paid for" images from Cricut on my new Cameo.

Hi Valerie! I can't find your email. Please send a message to smallbitsofpaper @ hotmail . com (remove spaces) and I'd be happy to send a link to my new video.
